Happy Holiday Cooking with CBD Oil

Here come the holidays and along with the season of giving comes all the amazing festive foods and beverages. Whether you’re new to the CBD (cannabidiol oil) scene or simply looking to try some new recipes, here are a few ways to incorporate this natural product into your December dishes. Once you’ve tried them, you’ll want to cook them well into the New Year and beyond. 

Better Cannabutter 

One of the easiest ways to incorporate cannabidiol oil into holiday cooking and baking is by making a big ole batch of CBD-infused butter often referred to as Cannabutter. 

4 cups (1 pound or four cubes) of butter  

2 cups of hot water 

20 MG of CBD oil 

Chop the butter into smaller pieces, place them in a large pot along with the water and hemp oil. Cook on low heat for two hours allowing the oil to infuse into the fat of the butter and the water to reduce. Stir consistently to avoid burning. Once cooled slightly, put into a sealable container and keep refrigerated. Use as you would with regular butter as an ingredient in recipes with many traditional treats like cookies, cakes, pies, gravy, stuffing, etc.  

NOTE: Don’t use margarine – the consistency is just – wrong – and it doesn’t absorb the hemp oil into the fat of the butter the way it should for maximum absorption.

Semi-Homemade CBD Cranberry-Mandarin Relish Supreme 

This is a quick and delicious cranberry dish for those who don’t really care for the taste or look of that plain jellied cranberry sauce coming out of a can. However, it does come mostly from this container in this semi-homemade. You can use the same amount of cooked or frozen (thawed+drained) cranberries if you desire but it will take longer to prepare. For the quick version combine these ingredients together: 

1 14-ounce can of whole cranberries (not the jellied version) 

1 11-ounce can of Mandarin oranges (coarsely chopped after draining the juice) 

1/2 cup of chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans work best preferably unsalted) 

Season with cinnamon and nutmeg to taste (about 1/2 tsp each) 

10 MG of CBD oil 

If this is part of your holiday feast and you’re expecting a ton of guests, consider doubling or even tripling this recipe for big cranberry fans. As always place into a sealed container and refrigerate. For the best results, prepare the night (or several hours) beforehand allowing the spices and CBD oil to infuse better with the other ingredients. 

Hot Buttered Yum Rum 

This is a family recipe that has been passed down several over several generations. My Mom made it devoid of alcohol for the kiddos and CBD wasn’t readily available when I was a child. You’ve never tasted hot buttered rum like this! 

1 pound Better Cannabutter 

1 pound brown sugar (dark or light – your preference – I like dark better for the sheer color factor) 

1/2 gallon vanilla bean (the good stuff) ice cream (not ice milk or yogurt) 

NOTE:This makes a HUGE amount so unless you’re hosting a holiday party, consider cutting this recipe in half or quarter. It’s just the easy way I remember the recipe “by heart” without having to write it down.  

Put all the ingredients into a large bowl and allow to soften for about twenty minutes or so. Beat on medium speed with a mixer until all the “Better Cannabutter” has been creamed into the combination. When serving, depending upon the size of the mug, scoop one, two or three heaping serving teaspoons into the cup adding a shot of rum (adults 21+ only) before pouring extremely warm water to fill and stir. Remember temperatures above the boiling point causes properties of CBD to evaporate and lose effectiveness. 

You’ll notice a delicious froth that forms on top. Keep leftovers of this chilly mixture refrigerated in a sealed container. You’ll also notice the mixture may separate when storing and that’s completely normal as the fats separate from the sugar. Just beat briskly either by hand or with a mixer for about a minute to combine the ingredients back together.  

IMPORTANT NOTE: Don’t overuse! Be mindful of the fact you shouldn’t use Better Butter in Hot Buttered Yum and then add MORE hemp oil to the mixture as one example. Be mindful of dosages especially for first-time users, as this could prove problematic although seasoned CBD participants may be able to experiment a little bit.
