Coca-Cola Considers The Benefits Of A CBD Beverage

With a new report stating that CBD sales could reach $22 billion by 2020, there’s no doubt that cannabidiol products are gaining mainstream recognition. It’s in almost every industry: there are already CBD pain relief products, CBD anti-aging products, and CBD cosmetics.

And it looks like cannabidiol products might be soon entering a new industry. This September, a new report from Bloomberg announced that Coca-Cola is currently looking into using CBD in its soda. CBD is the non-psychoactive element in hemp plants that’s been generating a buzz in the health, wellness, and medicine industries. So what would this look like? Is it safe to use CBD as an ingredient in soft drinks? And what are some potential benefits to consumers?

According to a report in Bloomberg, Coca-Cola has been “eyeing” the emerging CBD industry to see if they’d like to add this healthful element into their beverages in the future. In the statement, Coca-Cola expressed that they were looking into partnering with Aurora Cannabis, a Canadian grower.

And Coca-Cola isn’t the only one in on this trend. The report also stated that Molson Coors Brewing Company, Constellation Brands Inc. (the owner of Corona) and Diageo PLC (owners of Guinness beer) are all interested in making the foray into beverages that contain CBD.

Why would CBD work in Soda?

If you’re not familiar with how CBD differs from THC, this may seem like a strange move on the part of these major beverage manufacturers. However, CBD and THC are only a few of many components in the cannabis plant. And while THC does contain psychoactive components, CBD is non-psychoactive. Basically, it means that CBD, unlike THC, will not get a person “high” from ingestion.

What about drug tests and CBD in soda? Well, because drug tests generally test for THC (responsible for the “high” of marijuana use), CBD doesn’t usually impact drug tests. This is what would make CBD a potentially helpful and legal component in soda.

Though the purest form is certainly CBD tinctures that don’t have the added sugars, chemicals, and additives of soda and other soft drinks, this is a fascinating development in the world of cannabis.

What are Some of the Potential Benefits of a CBD-based soda?

Though many companies are still in the works with CBD-based soft drinks and beverages, we’re already thinking of some of the benefits that might come from these drinks.

Relaxation & Wellbeing

There’s a reason why there are so many CBD health and wellness products already on the market.

It’s possible that a soft drink containing CBD could contribute to greater relaxation and well-being. Numerous studies have shown that CBD has the potential for major relaxation benefits, even possibly proving helpful to those suffering from insomnia. These relaxation benefits are attributed to the way CBD interacts with the brain’s neurotransmitters and the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Studies have linked CBD to interaction with the brain’s 5-H21A receptors, which are involved in the regulation of serotonin. Serotonin has been called the “happy chemical” for its role in increasing well-being.

And although soda probably won’t be replacing mental health professionals any time soon, there is an intriguingly powerful mental health component to CBD, as its known to help with mental health disorders like anxiety and ADHD.

Inflammation & Chronic Pain Reduction

Cannabidiol products have been extensively studied for their role in chronic pain. There’s also a good chance that CBD-containing soft drinks could help consumers fight inflammation. Though in some cases inflammation is a normal defense mechanism for the body, it can also be linked to issues of chronic pain.

CBD has been studied extensively for its ability to moderate both inflammation and chronic pain. From arthritic pain to neuralgia (or nerve pain), to uses by athletes for muscle soreness, CBD can be used to moderate pain in a lot of different cases. Much of this is due to its ability to decrease inflammation in the body.

Though we’re not sure what a CBD-based soda would look like, it’s exciting to imagine the possibilities.

Despite the intriguing development of using CBD in soda, it will always be preferable to enjoy CBD in its purest form. CBD tinctures, CBD skin care products, and other CBD health and wellness products don’t contain sugar or artificial flavors or colors, and so offer benefits without the potential drawbacks of added ingredients.
