As cannabis and its derivatives become legal across America, doctors around the world are discussing the role of CBD in contemporary medicine. Here’s a look at what four certified doctors are saying about the use of this compound to treat medical conditions and improve overall health.

According to Dr. Grinspoon, CBD is obtainable in most parts of the United States. CBD extracted from hemp stands legal as a result of the Farm Bill 2018. In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lifted some bans on the use of CBD for scientific purposes, making it easier to test and distribute the product for patients.

Dr. Aimee Shunney says that, “in most cases, CBD works faster and better than the other tools in my toolbox. It has been a game changer.”

Doctors like Shunney and Bonni Goldstein have already started recommending CBD to patients. Dr. Goldstein uses CBD oil to treat children with intractable epilepsy, autism, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and other life-altering illnesses and disorders.

How does CBD affect the body?

According to Dr. Peter Grinspoon from the Harvard Medical School, CBD or cannabidiol is derived directly from the hemp plant and while it is certainly related to cannabis and marijuana, CBD on its own can provide relief for a variety of health problems facing Americans today. CBD is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis behind THC and does not produce a euphoric high associated with marijuana.

Humans have a densely distributed system of cannabinoid receptors known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which aids in regulating chemicals linked with anxiety, inflammation, and the immune system. For those that are healthy, CBD can be a great way to stimulate these receptors to increase mood, motivation, and memory. However, CBD can also help to regulate this system for those that suffer from pain or anxiety-related issues associated with loss of appetite, chronic pain, muscle control, and more. As cannabis becomes legal in larger volumes, the potential uses for CBD and its counterparts are seemingly endless.

Who should use CBD?

Hundreds of videos have been released online to show the positive effects of CBD derivatives on several illnesses and ailments, including Dravet Syndrome and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, which have been known to be unresponsive to typical anti-seizure medication. For some, CBD helped ease symptoms associated with seizures, shorten the seizures themselves, or stop them altogether. Epidiolex was recently approved by the FDA as the first ever cannabis-derived medication for such issues.

CBD oil can easily treat more than just seizures, however. It has been used for those that suffer from anxiety disorders, insomnia, and chronic pain. Although more studies are needed to gauge the long-term effects of CBD use in humans, studies show that it can lower neuropathic pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, which is one of the most difficult pains to treat!

According to Dr. Aimee Shunney, “CBD changed my life… Personally, it helped my long-time-middle-of-the-night-insomniac husband sleep well again. It also allowed me to get back to sleep easier, something I had not done well since my son was born almost 10 years ago. Over time, I also found it improved my ability to react less to stressful situations…”

You should always ask your doctor before starting new medications or supplements. Each body is unique and what you need may be different than what another person needs. CBD can come with some side effects, including nausea, fatigue, and irritability. Similar to grapefruit juice, CBD can increase the level of medications that are in your blood, such as coumadin, so be sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are on any current medications. However, you cannot overdose on CBD and it is completely safe when bought from verified sellers… like us!
