The Old — But Dangerous — Standby
In 2013, Scientific American reported that 1 in 6 Americans takes a prescription psychiatric drug to treat a mental health problem like depression or anxiety. Seventeen percent of those take antidepressants, and approximately 8.5 percent take prescription anti-anxiety medication (aka “tranquilizers).
There’s no question that a tranquilizer can help in times of severe stress, such as the death of a loved one, loss of a job, etc., but they’re certainly not something that most Americans would consider taking on an everyday basis since they’re known to be addictive and can even be dangerous if not taken as directed.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were an alternative? Something that doesn’t require a prescription, has few — if any — side effects, and is safe and effective? CBD might just be the alternative you’ve been dreaming of …
How CBD Works for Stress and Anxiety
Studies have shown that CBD oil is extremely helpful for those suffering from too much stress. CBD interacts with the body’s own endocannabinoid system, “activating endogenous cannabinoid receptors, modulating neurotransmitter release and producing a wide range of central nervous system effects, including increased pleasure”, according to the National Institutes of Health’s study on military veterans suffering from PTSD.
There’s also no shortage of anecdotal evidence out there on the effects of CBD on stress and anxiety. Take the case of the woman with epilepsy who takes CBD not to help with her medical condition (although studies have shown that it likely does), but to control her daily anxiety levels. She’s noticed a definite improvement, and studies show that it will likely continue to improve since the effects of CBD are cumulative since it is stored in the fatty tissue until metabolized.
Adding CBD to Your Stress Management Strategy
While it’s doubtful that CBD is the definitive answer to everyday stress and the toll it takes on your mental and physical health, there appears to be little question that it’s a safe, effective alternative to self medicating with drugs (prescription or otherwise) and alcohol! Adding CBD to other strategies like yoga, physical exercise, slow, deep breathing, etc., just makes sense. You likely already take a multivitamin to ensure that you’re getting the nutrients your body needs. Adding CBD to your daily routine is easy. It comes in many forms — oil, tincture, vape and even capsules, so you can choose the method that works best for you and your lifestyle.
