CBD Used As A Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine upholds a philosophy that to treat illness or maintain good health you must address the whole person. It follows the idea that all of our systems and organs rely on each other.

Modern or western medicine targets the specific symptom or ailment. Though western medicine sometimes results in more immediate pain relief and remission, it often doesn’t address the big picture or the whole individual.

Medical cannabis and medical marijuana play an important role in the alternative medicine industry. The healing properties of both hemp and marijuana all stem from the cannabis sativa plant.

Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC determines whether or not we label the cannabis plant hemp or marijuana. The cannabinoid THC famously brings about the high or euphoric sensation. While THC also possesses healing properties, we mostly associate it with recreational use.

We consider a cannabis plant marijuana if it has a THC content between .5 and 30%. Hemp, on the other hand, must contain a THC level of under .3%.

What is CBD oil?

CBD or cannabinol oil represents the oil or serum extracted from the hemp plant. The extraction process uses roots, seeds, or flowers of the plant. Many different extraction methods exist, but some of the most popular include:

  •     CO2 extraction uses oxygen to isolate the cannabinol preserving the potency and maintaining the purity.
  •     Ethanol represents a more complicated and dangerous process primarily used for vaping purposes.
  •     Olive oil used as a base infuses the plant material into a tincture. Yes, go ahead and try this at home! This method takes anywhere from two to six weeks to complete. Though very safe, the tincture’s organic properties do make it perishable.
  •     Pure essential hemp oil, like any essential oil, should not be used or administered in an undiluted form.

What is ECS and how does it work?

Both hemp and marijuana share a tumultuous history when it comes to legalization and social acceptance. The positive effects resulting from marijuana and hemp treatments on a variety of ailments encouraged extensive research in the 1980s.

The research conducted in the 1980s revealed a fantastic discovery known as the Endocannabinoid System or ECS. The ECS consists of a system running through the bodies of all mammals, including humans.

The ECS involves a series of small endogenous molecules derived from arachidonic acid, anandamide, and arachidonoyl glycerol. These molecules referred to as endocannabinoids, run throughout every organ and system of the body.

Homeostasis or balance represents the primary function of the ECS. The ECS presence throughout the body helps explain why so many ailments have seen improvement through cannabis treatment.

The ECS works at the cellular level by stimulating C1 or C2 receptors found in the cellular nucleus determined by the system or organ affected. Once stimulated they signal the DNA to produce a protein to stop the production of arachidonic acid thereby reducing inflammation and pain.

C1 receptors are found mostly in the reproductive system, brain, blood, and muscles. Targeting these receptors may relieve pain and also have anti-nausea and anti-spasmodic inclinations.

The spleen and other digestive organs house the C2 receptors which play a part in controlling inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

How cannabis and CBD oil works with the ECS

The ECS may represent the very foundation of the adage that the body heals itself. However, genetics, autoimmune disease and poor lifestyle choices such as an unbalanced diet or substance abuse wreak havoc on the ECS and its ability to function.

The use of cannabis sparks the ECS system because the cannabis plant has the same network or Phyto cannabinoids that helps protect the plant itself from outside elements. The strain of the cannabis and cannabinoids it contains dictates the receptors targeted.

Though over a hundred cannabinoids exist, CBD and THC are the most notable. CBD oil, of course, contains CBD usually diluted in a base and sometimes with a flavoring such as peppermint for ingestible products.

CBD oil may be ingested or used topically. Taken as a tincture, capsules, or through edibles such as gummies or candy, CBD oil may help with pain management, anxiety, sleep disorders and many other problems.

Adding CBD oil to a base such as almond oil or a massage lotion provides a great way to administer it topically. The body’s largest organ, (the skin) immediately receives the CBD oil at the cellular level often resulting in pain relieving and anti-stress and anti-anxiety results.

Additionally, hemp oil and CBD oil also contain protein, balanced fatty acids, and antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E.

Make sure to discuss usage and dosage with a healthcare professional to determine how CBD oil may best work into your health routine.
