What is CBD?
While there has been a lot of talk lately about CBD and the various health benefits it can provide, you may still be wondering what exactly it is. Known as cannabidiol, CBD is one of over 100 compounds called cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. Another of these cannabinoids, THC, is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis that causes the “high” sensation marijuana is known for. However, unlike THC, cannabidiol is not psychoactive and does not produce this high. Using products that contain CBD (but no THC) can then provide many of the same health benefits associated with marijuana without any of the psychoactive effects. While more research needs to be conducted to discover all of the health benefits this oil can provide, CBD has been shown effective at treating a variety of burns.
The Soothing Power of CBD
So how exactly do CBD-based products help to treat burns? One of the primary reasons cannabidiol is so great for treating burns is that it is known to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation by weakening cortisol secretion and decreasing blood levels. This helps to soothe the skin and relieve some of the irritation associated with burns. Additionally, CBD oil contains the terpene linalool. Terpenes are a class of compounds found in many plants, and linalool is known for relieving pain and providing a cooling effect, which could explain why CBD is so effective at helping to soothe burns.
CBD’s Antibacterial Properties
Another benefit of using CBD hemp oil on burns is that this may help to keep them clean. Whenever skin is damaged, it is critical to keep the area clean in order to prevent bacteria from infiltrating the weakened skin, as this could cause an infection. Fortunately, cannabidiol has been shown to have antimicrobial qualities, and it has been shown particularly potent against MRSA, which is one of the most dangerous pathogens known to affect wounds. Using CBD oil on your wounds can then keep them from becoming infected while reducing pain and swelling.
