For those in the know, when it comes to the use of CBD (or cannabidiol oil), we’re already aware CBD products do not produce the “high” that users of marijuana experience. New study shows that Cannabidiol products are almost completely devoid of THC (or tetrahydrocannabinol) which is another natural compound found in plants of the Cannabis genus.

h3: CBD versus THC and the EDC System

CBD hemp oil can be extracted from either marijuana plants with higher concentrations of THC or hemp plants that contain less than 0.3 percent of THC. Both compounds interact with our body’s EDC (or endocannabinoid), system but they deliver very different results.

To briefly understand how the body’s EDC system operates it’s helpful to know a little bit about homeostasis which is a fundamental concept in the brain’s biology. And the easiest way to understand homeostasis is to compare it to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In simple terms, similar to the fairy tale, the body’s EDC system strives to keep things just right, not too hot and not too cold to avoid extreme conditions. Research suggests some of the many things EDC monitors and controls include:

  • Appetite, metabolism, and digestion
  • Chronic pain and inflammation
  • Mood, learning, and memory
  • Stress levels and sleep
  • Liver, skin, nerve, cardiovascular, and reproductive system functions

These vital physical conditions and brain functions are among the reasons why users are looking to CBD drops or consumables for relief or positive assistance from problems by a growing number of people. CBD consumables are also being sold in the form of capsules, softgels, sprays, and chewable gummies. Exterior solutions are available through creams and ointments for everything from symptom relief to skin care products and more.

New Anti-Intoxication Study

Now that we know a little bit more about how CBD operates in the EDC system, research is ongoing about new ways cannabidiol may assist with other ways our minds and bodies operate. There’s a new cannabis study that shows the molecular mechanisms at work when using CBD blocks the psychiatric effects caused by THC.

As most of us know, it was previously revealed that strains of cannabis with higher levels of THC and lower levels of CBD can deliver the sensation of paranoia, increased anxiety and addictive-like behaviors. However, the reason why these psychiatric effects were occurring was not fully understood. Even though it seems counterintuitive, researchers at the Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry have shown the molecular mechanisms at work in CBD can block these types of side-effects caused by THC.

Researchers Reveal

In the study, Steven Laviolette, Ph.D. along with his research team used rodents to investigate the role of the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK), a molecule in the brain, which triggers the neuropsychiatric effects of THC. Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, Laviolette revealed:

“For years we have known that strains of cannabis high in THC and low in CBD were more likely to cause psychiatric side-effects Our findings identify for the first time the molecular mechanisms by which CBD may actually block these THC-related side-effects.”

Likely using CBD tinctures to deliver precise dosage to a group of rats, those given THC had higher levels of anxiety and were more sensitive to fear-based learning. The rodents given both CBD and THC were less anxious and not as sensitive to fear-based training. Based on the results, the research team is proposing CBD blocks the ability of THC to overstimulate the ERK pathway in the brain and prevent those negative side-effects.

Based on these results, the research team proposes that CBD blocks the ability of THC to overstimulate the ERK pathway in the hippocampus and thus prevent its negative side-effects. There are other studies suggesting CBD oil assists those struggling with addiction and could help in the withdrawal process when looking to kick the habit.
