Does CBD Help With Autism?

After years of intensive research, the myths associated with cannabis have been debunked. Cannabis has proved to be a miracle plant with numerous medicinal and therapeutic benefits. It contains dozens of compounds with cannabidiol (CBD) being among the most potent components. CBD has many medicinal and wellness gains and does not make users “high.” For these reasons, many cannabidiol products flood the market today ranging from CBD oil to consumables and skin care. You can buy CBD hemp products online or in a brick and mortar store near you.

CBD is an effective treatment for inflammation, chronic pain, acne, some types of cancer, and heart problems. Research and anecdotal reports affirm that it has positive outcomes for various neurological disorders such as stress, anxiety, epilepsy, and seizures. In line with this, people have questioned whether it can help children with autism—a common yet complex neurodevelopmental disorder.

CBD Oil and Autism

In the US, autism affects one in 59 children, mainly boys. Children with autism exhibit social and cognitive impairments. They portray intellectual disability, impaired social skills, and difficulties in coordination and attention. Unfortunately, autism has no cure. Children with autism rely on medications and therapy to suppress the symptoms. They engage in therapies such as speech and language therapy and applied behavior analysis.

Anecdotal evidence

Recently, CBD oil has offered hope for helping children with autism by managing the effects of the disease. The internet is flooded with testimonies of parents of kids with autism proclaiming the multitude of benefits. They contend that it has positive effects on seizures and anxiety. Some parents testify that CBD hemp oil has benefited their autistic children by lessening aggressive behavior, reducing seizures, and improving speech.

Scientific Research

Although anecdotal evidence proclaims the effectiveness of CBD oils in helping autistic children, peer-reviewed scientific research is lacking. There have been few studies on CBD and autism, and most of them are on animal samples. In 2015, the Canadian Pediatric Society issued a statement professing that there is little research to support the efficacy and safety of CBD on children. In Ontario, doctors are informed not to prescribe CBD to patients less than 25 years.  Due to the limited research, nothing definitive can be concluded on CBD and autism. Regrettably, a widespread reluctance exists in studying the effects of cannabis in children.

In 2015, Harvard University collaborated with Boston Children’s hospital to draft a review of cannabis and autism research carried to date. The review revealed that research is promising and maybe in future, CBD would be declared as an effective treatment for autism. To date, research continues to be conducted with promising results.

Research conducted by Israeli researchers revealed that medical cannabis is an effective therapy for autistic children. The study involved 60 children with autism and lasted seven months. After treating autistic children with high concentrations of CBD oil, positive effects were recorded. The parents of autistic children said that they noted changes in behavior, anxiety levels, and ability to communicate. They witnessed a decrease in problematic behavior, improvement in communication, and a reduction in anxiety.

Among the biggest effects on the future CBD and autism research is FDA’s approval of Epidiolex. Epidiolex is a treatment for childhood epilepsy derived from CBD hemp oil. Maybe as doctors see the effects of Epidiolex, they will delve into research on medical cannabis and autism.

Currently, there is no concrete scientific research to show that CBD is an effective remedy for autism. The available evidence comes from parents of autistic children personal experiences that lack scientific backing. Nevertheless, current research on CBD oil and autism is promising. It is a matter of time before it is declared safe and effective for autistic kids.
