The Benefits of CBD Oil for Addiction

Addiction is an overwhelming problem in the United States. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 19.7 million American adults battled with substance abuse in 2017. It wrecks the lives of those that suffer from it and those that care about them. Addicts deal with repercussions in their finances, relationships and their health. With the opioid crisis a constant in the news, America is desperate to find a cure.

CBD Oil for Drug Addiction

With the legalization of marijuana in many states, the therapeutic properties are finally starting to be studied and better understood. We already know CBD oil can help those struggling with smoking addiction. And now, a growing number of scientists have been interested in the effects CBD oil, CBD hemp oil, or Cannabidiol oil as it’s also known, can have on those that suffer from drug addiction.

A 2012 study, by the University of Crete in Greece, studied the effect of CBD oil on rats after introducing them to opioids. The study found that CBD oil interferes with the brain reward mechanisms that are responsible for our craving of opioids. Therefore, they recommended that CBD oil may be clinically useful for the treatment of opioid addiction.

CBD Oil For Relapse Prevention

Addicts that manage to break free from their addiction have a constant battle with relapse. Often a stressful event, acute or chronic anxiety can trigger the addict to use again, even after months or years clean.

A more recent 2018 study by the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego found that CBD oil was directly related to a reduction in drug seeking behavior. The study administered CBD oil to rats via a gel applied to the skin. The rats had previously been given alcohol and cocaine daily, on a voluntary basis. Meaning that the rats sought out the drugs voluntarily, once they had been introduced. The researchers tested the rats to see how they reacted to stress inducing situations. Before the use of CBD oil, the rats would seek their drug of choice after a stress event. After a week of CBD oil administration, there was a dramatic reduction in the rate of drug use after a stressful event. The results continued, even five months after the CBD oil had been used. This suggests CBD oil can be useful in preventing relapse caused by stress.

These are not the only studies proving CBD is beneficial for addiction and relapse prevention. If you’d like to see more studies, you can read thisthis or this.

How To Use CBD Oil

CBD Oil is not habit-forming and does not have psychoactive properties. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is just one compound found in the plant Cannabis sativa. THC is a separate compound found in the same plant and it does have psychoactive properties, which is why people commonly associate marijuana with getting high. But CBD by itself will not get you high and offers a range of health benefits, including the addiction therapy mentioned above, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

If you or a loved one struggles with addiction, CBD oil may be able to help. According to studies, CBD oil reduces the need for reward that our addiction often triggers. It’s been shown to help with both withdrawal symptoms and relapse prevention. CBD oil is a safe, non-habit-forming way to deal with the stress and complications addiction can cause in your life.
