The answer is NO. There has been no reliable research on the ability of CBD (Cannabidiol) to treat the Coronavirus. But do not panic. Firstly, there are steps you can take to help prevent contracting the virus. And if you do happen to get the virus, you can help reduce the symptoms. Let’s take a look at what we know.
Preventing COVID-19 And Other Viruses
There are some straight forward ways to help reduce the risk of contracting ANY virus. Follow the CDC guidelines, which include the following:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your face, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe to clean and disinfect surfaces that you frequently touch.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Then throw away the tissue and wash your hands.
- Stay home when sick.
- Use a facemask only if you have symptoms of COVID-19, so that you can prevent spreading it to others. Unless you are sick, face masks are not recommended.
Symptoms of Coronavirus
COVID-19 can cause a respiratory illness that ranges from mild to severe or even deadly. The symptoms usually start between 2 to 14 days after you get infected. They include:
- Shortness of Breath
If you or your loved ones experience these symptoms, see your health care provider to be tested.
Strengthen Your Resistance
There are some things you can do to help prepare for illness before it happens to you. Building your body’s ability to fight off viruses can help to decrease the severity of the illness and help you get back on your feet faster.
- Eat a healthy diet
- Get the required amount of sleep (about 7 hours)
- Reduce stress
Eating fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants will help boost your overall health. Resulting in a higher level of protection from both viral and bacterial infections. Nutrient-dense foods, like dark leafy greens, berries, salmon, and sweet potatoes contain lots of anti-inflammatory properties. These help build up your immune system defenses. Lastly, avoid sugar, gluten, and processed foods as these dramatically decrease immune function.
CBD shows tremendous promise in improving the functioning of the gut. It promotes the growth of good bacteria, balances the endocannabinoid system, aids overall digestive health, and increases gut barrier function.
Lack of sleep compromises your immune system and increases your chances of getting sick. Studies show that people who do not get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus. Lack of sleep can also affect the speed in which you recover if you do get ill.
While research on CBD is in its early stages, preliminary studies suggest CBD oil may be useful for helping to reduce anxiety, resulting in improved sleep quality.
In a 2019 research paper published in The Permanente Journal, researchers performed tests on patients experiencing anxiety and poor sleep. As a result, 79.2% of them reported a decline in anxiety levels, whereas 66.7% reported improvement in the quality of sleep after just one month of using CBD daily.
Taking steps to help manage stress, and anxiety can have many health benefits. First, begin by getting physically active. Meditation, listening to music and spending quality time with friends are great ways of decreasing stress.
For generalized anxiety disorder, the NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) says that CBD has been shown to reduce stress in lab animals, like rats. Test subjects showed lower behavioral signs of anxiety and reduced heart rates, associated with symptoms of anxiety.
