What is CBD Isolate and How is it Made?
As America’s preferred wholesaler and Isolate producer, we here at Industrial Hemp Partners (IHP) and TerraVida Online often get asked how we make CBD isolate, which seems like some kind of magic white powder to those who are not familiar with it. Let’s start with all the basics, by explaining this in depth:

WHAT IS CBD ISOLATE?
CBD isolate is pure CBD. It is a crystalline, odorless and tasteless white powder that contains 99% or more CBD and no other cannabinoids, no terpenes and no flavanols.
If you are interested in CBD and you are confused by the many forms that are available on the market, you are not alone. Some products contain full spectrum CBD while others contain isolated CBD and still others contain broad spectrum CBD. It is difficult to know which is which if you are new to this interesting product. In this article we discuss CBD isolate, also known as pure CBD.
In other words, all plant matter that exists in the hemp plant such as chlorophyll, oils, waxes, terpenes and other cannabinoids are removed, creating a finished product that is almost pure CBD. You may find that most CBD isolate is available as CBD oil after being infused into a carrier oil.
HOW IS CBD ISOLATE MADE?
CBD can be extracted from hemp using CO2 or cold ethanol or harsh chemicals such as butane and hexane. You will want to avoid the latter as such products will contain traces of carcinogenic compounds. Rather buy CBD that is extracted using CO2 or cold ethanol. To make CBD isolate:
- The manufacturer first extracts CBD but the resulting CBD contains other plant materials that naturally exist in the hemp plant. In other words, the extract is full spectrum CBD that contains less than o.3% THC.
- In order to get pure CBD, the extracted product undergoes a purifying process which includes filtration which removes all plant materials out.
- Following the filtration process, the extract goes through another process called winterization process which then removes any waxes and other plant materials that remained after filtration. What remains is a fine white powder that is 99% pure CBD.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CBD ISOLATE?
You may be aware that marijuana was banned in the 1930s because it contains THC, the cannabinoid that makes people high. It is this cannabinoid that is tested for in drug tests, and if you have a certain level of it in your blood or urine you may fail the drug test. This applies to athletes going for competitions, police officers, emergency personnel, military service people and other people who undergo routine drug tests. For this reason, people are more interested in the benefits of CBD without the disadvantages of THC. Though the law specifies that the hemp that is grown for medicinal purposes should contain less than 0.3% THC, the CBD that comes out of it may contain enough THC to mess up with some people’s drug tests even though they do not feel any high. That is why manufacturers came up with the idea of CBD isolate which does not contain any THC.
CBD isolate is also ideal for people who are sensitive to THC. Such people may need the benefits of CBD just as anyone else yet they will react negatively to any THC present in the CBD product.
HOW IS CBD ISOLATE USED?
CBD isolate has no taste and no odor so you can basically use it any way you want. However, there is no need to vape it in order to receive its benefits since it is already been decarboxylated. Here are some of the ways that people use it.
Place it Directly Under the Tongue: This is the easiest way to use CBD isolate. Keep it there for about 60 seconds while it does its work. It will be absorbed through the mucus membranes right into the bloodstream and it will immediately begin to make the right changes in the body. Because CBD isolate is tasteless and odorless the experience has no discomfort.
Create Your Own CBD Oil and Custom Products: You can infuse the CBD isolate into a carrier oil such as MCT (extracted from coconut oil), grapeseed, or olive to create your own CBD oil that is measured according to your needs. This CBD oil can then be taken sublingually or ingested directly or applied topically for the desired effects.
Cook or Bake with CBD Oil: The CBD oil that you make as above has many uses. You can ingest in directly. You can also use it to cook or bake. Just be aware that it tends to lose its power at high temperatures so limit it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175-180 degrees Celsius). The moment you reach 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) you destroy its potency. For that reason you may want to use it less for cooking.
Create Topical Ointments: You can mix your CBD oil with skin oils or creams or lotions to create a topical ointment that you can apply on sore muscles and joints to ease pain and inflammation. Coconut oil is one of the best for this purpose.
Add it Your Juices or Smoothies: If you want to ingest CBD isolate indirectly, you can add it to your fruit/vegetable juice or smoothie in the morning. It will blend nicely with the liquid, providing additional benefits to an already healthy way to start your day.
Add CBD Isolate to Coffee or Tea: If you are not into juices and smoothies or if you have no time to make them, you can still add CBD isolate to your morning coffee or tea. It will not be damaged since the temperature is below boiling point and it will still do its work.
Make a CBD Sweetener: Some people who use sweeteners in their teas and coffees like to make a sweetener with CBD isolate. It is convenient because each time you use your sweetener you get a dose of CBD. To make the sweetener, heat honey or agave in a double boiler (even a makeshift one). Then add CBD isolate powder and mix it in thoroughly till it dissolves. Then use the sweetener in coffee, tea or porridge. You can even apply it on toast.
CBD isolate contains 99% CBD. Every gram of CBD isolate contains 990 milligrams of CBD. Therefore, be aware of how much you are using so that that you get the correct dosage every time.
