What is CBD?
Before understanding why CBD is the ultimate sleep aid, it’s important to understand just what CBD is. Cannabidiol, most commonly known as CBD, is one of the main compounds found in marijuana plants. Although research conducted at Palo Alto University yields that CBD and sleep studies are still in their infancy, the mixed results are still promising. CBD may combat REM sleep disorder behaviors as well as excessive daytime sleepiness through sleep regulation. It’s serotonin-modulating properties have shown positive effects for patients with sleep apnea. In a study done with rats, CBD was shown to increase the total amount time spent sleeping. Another study monitored the effects of CBD as a form of treatment for a young girl suffering with PTSD, which concluded with positive results in decreasing anxiety and improving the quality of her sleep.
CBD has physically relaxing properties. Furthermore, it reduces anxiety and alleviates pain. Both pain and anxiety are major causes of insomnia. Regardless of CBD’s effects on the sleep cycle, it’s anxiety reducing and pain relieving properties alone target the potential root of the victim’s sleeping disorder.
Some studies have found that small doses of CBD actually increase alertness, combatting daytime sleepiness. This is a nod towards it’s sleep regulating properties, showing a positive effect on your overall circadian rhythm – not just the sleep cycle itself.
