The Many Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD Oil benefits

Recent years have seen a drastic increase in the popularity of medical marijuana use. However, only recently have more people begun to talk about CBD oil and the ways it can improve overall health and wellbeing. If you are unfamiliar with it and its medical uses, the first question you are likely asking yourself is “what is CBD oil?”.

CBD oil (or Cannabidiol) is one of over 100 chemical compounds that can be found in the marijuana plant. CBD is an oil typically extracted from the resin glands on cannabis (marijuana) stalks and flowers. The medicinal use of this oil has been growing in popularity recently due not only to its healing properties, but also because the compound is non psychoactive, meaning that it does not produce the “high” associated with marijuana use, making it a better alternative for people who are concerned with the mind-altering effects of other cannabinoids such as THC.

For those looking for the healing powers of medical marijuana but who do not want to experience the psychotropic effects of THC, CBD oil can be a great alternative. Here are just a few of the health benefits that CBD oil has been shown to provide.

Relieves Pain and Inflammation

Similar to its cousin THC, CBD has been shown to prove useful in the reduction of pain and inflammation in patients with chronic conditions. In fact, a 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly suppressed chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rodents. Another study conducted in Canada in 2007 also found that a CBD and THC buccal spray combination was found to be effective in treating the neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis, which can be debilitating for these patients. While more research may still need to be conducted, it is already proving highly effective in treating chronic pain.

Treats Epilepsy

Recent studies have also begun to look into CBD oil as a treatment option to prevent seizures in patients with epilepsy. While THC may also have antiepileptic properties, CBD oil is gaining popularity due to the fact that, it being non-psychoactive, it can be used to treat childhood epilepsy. In fact, in 2014 researchers reported that it could prove to be a promising treatment option in children with treatment-resistant epilepsy. In the study, patients received a 98 percent oil-based CBD extract, and after 3 months of treatment, 39 percent of the patients had a more than 50 percent reduction in seizures.

Relieves Nausea

CBD oil can also provide much-needed relief for people who suffer from chronic nausea and vomiting. While cannabis has been used for centuries for nausea suppression, recent research has highlighted CBD oil as particularly helpful in reducing nausea. In particular, a 2012 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that it acts in a diphasic manner, meaning that at low doses it suppresses nausea and vomiting, but it has the opposite effect at higher doses.

Lowers Incidence of Diabetes

There is also significant potential for CBD treatment to lower the incidence of diabetes. In a 2006 study of non-obese mice, the incidence of diabetes in the mice dropped from 86 percent in non-treated mice to an incidence of 30 percent is mice who received Cannabidiol treatment.

Studies conducted in recent years have begun to highlight the potential health benefits and healing properties of CBD oil, leading to its recent rise in popularity. As more research is done into the its effects, it is likely that more benefits will be discovered, and that the medicinal use of CBD oil will continue to grow in popularity.
