CBD for Your Best Friend: Your Pet

With the influx of studies emerging touting the amazing health benefits of CBD, or cannabidiol and the spreading legalization of medical and recreational marijuana, it makes one wonder, what can it do for my ailing pet?

You are not the first one to wonder if the benefits for humans can translate to our furry friends. Recently, Cornell University and Colorado State University have published studies that have shown that yes, our pets can be helped with ailments such as arthritis and epilepsy simply by ingesting CBD.

A Quick Overview of CBD

CBD is extracted from the Hemp plant and used for a vast array of reasons.

Both through clinical and anecdotal evidence, CBD has been known to treat a myriad of ailments in humans ranging from physiological to psychological. Over the years of testing and development, many products have been derived from hemp or cannabis oil including consumables, skincare, wellness products, spa treatments, and now animal and pet products.

How Can it Help My Pet?

Because the usage of CBD with pets is relatively new, scientific research is just getting started in this realm. As mentioned earlier, two promising studies touting the positive effects of CBD on dogs with arthritis and epilepsy are just the start of many studies yet to come.

There is also a plethora of anecdotal support for hemp CBD oil for pet ailments and illness. PetMD states that it can be used to treat seizures, nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions. The AKC also notes its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits,  and appetite stimulation.

How Do I Administer CBD to My Pet?

It is very important to note that not all CBD products are created equal. The AKC has some suggestions when shopping for hemp oil for your pet:

  • Try and buy organic products: that way you know that harmful pesticides, fungicides, or solvents aren’t used.
  • Don’t buy the cheapest product on you can find: Typically, higher-priced CBD oils are going to be the purest and highest quality. Cheaper options may contain pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals. Stay away from additives.
  • Get the CBD Certificate of Analysis: Good products will have had their products tested and will willingly provide their results that show how much CBD is in their offerings as well as ensuring there are no contaminates. This will also be a good way to ensure there is little to no THC which may be harmful to your pet.
  • A tincture may be best: Treats and tinctures are both available, but it may be easier, for some, to control the dosage in tincture form.

How Can I Tell if it’s Working?

Pay attention to your pet’s behavior. If they are acting more like their old selves, that is a good sign that the CBD may be working. If a pet whose appetite was diminished is eating more food, or an animal who was favoring one leg because of pain is now walking more normally, then these are both good signs.

There are also warning signs that you may have given your pet too much CBD. According to Preventive Pet, watch out for dry mouth, tremors, low blood pressure, lightheadedness, or drowsiness. If you see any of these warning signs, you may need to decrease your dosage. Always tell your veterinarian about changes made to your pet’s regimen.
